In 2019, Koevska, et. al., conducted study about Osteoporosis, which is characterized by low bone density and microarchitectural deterioration, poses a significant health risk, particularly in postmenopausal women. This randomized single-blind controlled prospective trial aimed to assess the effects of exercise on the quality of life in postmenopausal osteoporotic women over a one-year period.
Ninety-two women diagnosed with postmenopausal osteoporosis and receiving treatment at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, were randomly assigned to three groups. Group I engaged in specific exercises and physical modalities, Group II participated in exercises alone, and Group III, the control group, did not engage in any exercise regimen. All participants were concurrently receiving bisphosphonates, calcium, and vitamin D. The exercise sessions were conducted three times a week, with each exercise repeated 5-8 times.
Quality of life was assessed using the Qualeffo-41 questionnaire at the beginning of the study and after one year. The results demonstrated a significant statistical difference among the groups in terms of pain, physical activity, social life, and the perception of overall health (p < 0.0001). However, no significant difference was observed in terms of mental function (p < 0.3).
In conclusion, the study findings highlight the positive impact of regular exercise on the quality of life in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Patients who engaged in prescribed exercises exhibited significantly improved outcomes in pain management, physical activity levels, and social engagement compared to those who did not. This emphasizes the importance of incorporating non-pharmacological interventions, specifically tailored exercises, into the comprehensive management of postmenopausal osteoporosis to enhance overall well-being.
